Triathlon

Galyn has been training the last couple of months to compete in the US Toyota Open Triathlon (http://www.usopentriathlon.com/site7.aspx). He trained for the Olympic Distance which consists of a 1500 meter lake swim, a 25 mile bike ride and a 6.2 mile run. The triathlon was held in Dallas this past Sunday, Oct 5. Galyn's biggest concern was the swim ... but luckily it was the first event. This race was is a little different than other triathlons because it's a point to point race instead of a loop. So for this race, the swim was a Joe Pool Lake, he then would have to bike into Downtown Dallas to the American Airlines Center and then finish by completing the run on the Katy Trail. Because of logistics we were not able to watch Galyn swim, we were at the AAC to see him come in from the bike & start the run & finish. However, we never got the chance to see Galyn come in.

Galyn completed the 1500 meter swim (which he said went really well) & he went through the transition zone getting his bike. He was about 1.6 miles into the bike ride & was coming down a super steep hill (traveling at 32.3 mph per his bike computer) which was followed by a super sharp curve. When he realized the sharp curve he started braking... this made his back tire lock up & start fishtailing. Then his back tire blew out & he went down ... on his left side. He said he was able to hop up quickly, but knew there was something wrong with his shoulder.
Here are a few pictures of Galyn's injuries ....

Nice Road Rash ...
After we met up with Galyn we were able to get him cleaned up a bit & then headed to the hospital. We had fun people watching there for about 5 hours. They did x-rays and luckily nothing was broken, but he did have partial tears of ligaments in his shoulder which resulted in a separated shoulder. He now has to wear a shoulder splint for about 3-4 wks and will have a follow up with an orthopedic.
Besides the shoulder pain, Galyn is just frustrated he didn't get to finish the race. I think he's already thinking about another race once his shoulder heals!!
