Triathlon Time

The Metroplex Sprint Triathlon. June 13th 2009.
How this all started ...

After I had Tyler, when he was about 6 months old, I decided that I was going to do a Triathlon. Nothing too outrageous, just a sprint distance. Well, the challenge was on again... have a baby, do a triathlon.

Side note:
This happens to be the same race that Galyn did last year. The first one he did. The one where the swimming didn't go that great ... not the one where he separated his shoulder. (If anyone wants any additional info for either of these races, I would be happy to elaborate.)

Anyway, with Galyn's persistence, I signed up for Fit2Train ... a training program for triathlons. I was a little hesitant, I mean Ryan was not that old. He was 5 months old when the training started. Not to mention I was still breastfeeding. And, Galyn got a couple friends from his work to sign up too, with the added pressure that I could beat them.

Seriously, I was getting used to getting good sleep again, still hormonal and now Galyn is setting up races for me. Awesome.

Well, signing up for the training group was actually the best thing. It made me very accountable for my training. I mean, if we're paying for me to train, I needed to train. The training consisted of swimming, biking and running ... doing each of them a couple times a week. For example, every Tues morning we would meet at the SMU track at 6am for a track workout. And, without fail, guess who would not sleep Monday night. That's right Mr. Ryan Gafford. Okay, I take that back. He did sleep one Monday night straight .... the one where track workout was cancelled.

So, with 3 months of training the race was coming near. Galyn was great ... he adjusted he schedule so I could make as many of the workouts as I could. He also decided he would do the race as well.

We signed up for the race ... Me #101, Galyn #102 ... no turning back now.

In a triathlon you swim first, then bike and finish with a run.
Here are the distances for the Metroplex Sprint:
400m Swim (1/4 mile) - open water
11 mile Bike
2 mile Run

Race check-in.
We just got our Race numbers and age marked on us.

*Oh, with triathlons your age is marked on the back of your calf, and you age is based on how old you are by December 31st of the race year. So, I had a nice fat 31 marked on the back of my calf.

The swim.
Galyn and I were both in the same age group for this race ... 30-34 year olds.
All males and females start together. There were 55 in our age group. Our group was the first group to go for the entire race. They then stagger start the rest of the age groups until everyone goes.

Here is a picture of the swimming ... the path was a triangle. Swim out to the yellow buoy, turn at the buoy and swim parallel to the shore until the next yellow buoy, then turn again and swim back to the shore.

Galyn was much improved on his swim.

The swim for me went good. I was the 2nd girl in our age group out of the water ... my swim ranking out of everyone was 45th.

Transition 1 - going from swim to bike

I did beat Galyn out of the water...

...but he caught and passed me on the bike.
